Mt. Kilimanjaro Itinerary: Lemosho Crater

9 Day Lemosho Western Breach with Crater Camp Route & Luxury Walking Safari Itinerary

Highlights include:

  • Enjoy an un-crowded route up to the roof of Africa. With plenty of time to acclimatize, this challenging 9-day trek has a high success rate of reaching the summit.
  • Spend the day enjoying a Hemmingway style camp and exploring the wildlife and Maasai of West Kilimanjaro

We love this route up Kili for the lack of crowds and plenty of time to acclimatize on the way up. It is also one of the only routes where wildlife can be encountered. If you have the time, we highly suggest this route. With a slight threat of rock falls, we do require travelers to wear climbing helmets during certain stretches of the trekking. Please note that all Breach climbers must sign an extra waiver at the park gates - indicating they understand the extra risks involved. However this 9 day itinerary has a very high success rate and offers one of our favorite routes up the mountain. During certain times of the year this route may be deemed too dangerous and closed at the discretion of TANAPA.

Day 1: Moshi After arrival into Kilimanjaro airport in the evening, head to your hotel for overnight in Moshi.

Day 2: West Kili Walking Safari In the morning, at your hotel, you will have your gear/equipment check by your RLAT guide.  Then you will be driven to west Kilimanjaro for your walking safari adventure. This spectacular area is part of the Amboseli / Ngasurai Basin eco-system and offers spectacular landscapes with magnificent views of Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, Ol Doinyo Longido and Ol Doinyo Orok. It is one of the few areas in Africa where huge Elephant Bulls, more than 50 years old are regularly seen. It is also home to a large population of permanent and seasonal wildlife. Maasai “bomas” are scattered throughout the area. These maasai are still living the traditional way. They are spectacularly dressed and follow all the traditional ceremonies.  After lunch and a brief orientation, you will be taken on a waking safari of the conservation area to help prepare you for your climb the next day. Overnight Ndarakwai Camp or Kambi ya Tembo.

Day 3: Big Tree Camp (2780m) Drive to Lemosho via Londros Park where you will meet your guides and mountain crew. Hike a few hours through thick forest to tonight’s camp.

Day 4: Shira 1 Camp (3500m) Today reach the west side of the Shira Plateau, hiking about 6 hours through montane forest, through a transition zone, and into the heather zone where the old lava flows are visible. After a picnic lunch reach the edge of the plateau and then onto our camp that provides a dramatic view of Kilimanjaro and its glaciers. The Shira 1 area is not crowded and the views of the mountain here are spectacular. Overnight mountain camping.

Day 5: Shira 2 Camp (3990m) Today is an easy paced acclimatization day, enjoying a gentle walk across the Shira Plateau into the moorland of Kilimanjaro. Hiking time is 4-5 hours.

Day 6: Lava Tower (4640m) Today is an uphill climb of about 5 hours to the alpine moreland zone where pants are extremely hardy and consist of lichens, grasses and heather. Rest after lunch, then take a 2 hour acclimatization hike up the Lava Tower. This scramble will help prepare for the ascent up the Western Breach.

Day 7: Lava Tower (4640m) Today is an acclimatization day, a crucial pause before camping on the rim at 18,500ft. Hike upwards towards Arrow Glacier Camp and then return to the lower elevation of Lava Tower Camp.

Day 8: Arrow Glacier Camp (4830m) Today continue climbing towards the Western Breach ascent. Ascend slightly westward, climbing easy terrain through sree and rocky ridges. Enjoy stunning views of the Western Breach wall and the Breach Icicle. Tonight in camp the entire Shira Plateau lies below, offering stunning views.

Day 9: Crater Camp (5730m) Today is a difficult day climbing at altitude. Ascending the Western Breach, an imposing, steep wall of rock leading to the edge of Kibo’s Crater, the reward of being on the glaciers makes it all worthwhile. Crater Camp is considered one of the most beautiful campsites on the mountain. 7-8 hours hiking today.
Day 10: Uhuru Peak (5895m)/ Mweka High Camp (3790m) After an early breakfast make the 1.5 hour hike to Uhuru peak, reaching the summit of Kili around 8am. At this early hour, before the clouds set in, enjoy 360 degree views of Africa. Descend through the scree zone, then to the edge of a rainforest area to tonight’s camp. Congratulations, you made it to the Roof of Africa!

Day 11: Moshi This morning leave camp and an easy 3-4 hour hike to reach the park gate where you will bid farewell to your mountain crew, enjoy a picnic lunch and transfer back to the hotel in Moshi for a well deserved shower and dinner. Overnight in Moshi.

Day 12: This morning you’ll have a chance to sleep in and relax, before transferring to the airport for your international departure or continuing on your safari in Africa.
