Ol Doinyo Lengai Volcano: Tanzania’s Natural Wonders

Tanzania’s Natural Wonders; Ngorongoro, Embakai and Ol Doinyo Lengai

Highlights include:

  • Journey to the bottom of the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World
  • Trek to the remote Embakai Crater, seldom-visited but another one of Tanzania’s spectacular natural wonders
  • End your safari by summiting the Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano at sunrise

While the vast and wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater can officially lay claim to being one of the “7 Natural Wonders of the World”, this safari across Northern Tanzania brings you face to face with some of Tanzania’s other natural wonders, including Embakai Crater and Ol Doinyo Lengai. Escorted throughout by a team of local Maasai, you will also have a chance to walk next to Maasai on their ancestral lands, visit their homes and learn about their culture as a guest and a friend.

Day 1: Arrive Arusha Arriving into Arusha’s Kilimanjaro airport in the late afternoon; you will be greeted upon arrival by our warm, friendly guides. You will be transferred to a nearby hotel to rest and relax after the long international flight. Enjoying a leisurely dinner, notice the Sounds and smells of Africa all around you! Overnight Arusha

Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater After an early breakfast, depart for a full day in the famed Ngorongoro Crater. The crater is home to an amazing concentration and diversity of wildlife, perhaps most importantly the rare black rhinoceros. Drive down the steep walls of the crater, arriving at the crater floor in time for lunch, viewing wildlife the whole time. Spend the afternoon game driving across the crater floor, and around 3pm begin the steep ascent up the crater wall and head to the Enokanoka Camp where you will meet the camp staff, enjoy dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Enokanoka to Bulati Camp This morning your Maasai guides and donkeys will pack up camp as you head off on your first day trekking. Enjoy a leisurely 4 hour trek through the Tanzanian Highlands, arriving at Bulati camp in time for an afternoon shower and time to enjoy a sundowner as you admire the view before a hearty camp dinner.

Day 4: Bulati Camp to Embakai Crater This morning we hike about 4 hours to reach the Embakai Crater. Embakai is a mysterious, steep-sided crater which appears very suddenly as you ascend its deceptive slopes that plunge down to a broad lake below. Unlike the Ngorongoro Crater, there is no road access into Embakai and exploration is by foot only. This means there are no crowds, and somewhat surprising given we are not too far away from the bustling Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a deep sense of remote tranquility. Enjoy the stunning lake filled with pink flamingoes as the sun sets. Dinner and overnight in camp.

Day 5: Embakai to Naiyobi Camp This morning enjoy a short, leisurely hike of about 3 hours. After a picnic lunch, we’ll visit the stunning Naiyobi waterfalls as well as a Maasai boma. Having spent the past two days with a team of Maasai guides, you will have learned quite a bit about Maasai culture. Visiting this boma will give you a chance to complete your understanding about this proud and regal African tribe. This evening we’ll call it an early night and settle in for a few hours of sleep before our 2am drive to the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai.

Day 6: Climb Ol Doinyo Lengai After the early 2am wake up call and drive to the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai, we begin climbing. We will reach the summit around sunrise and spend about 30 minutes soaking in the views and exploring the volcano before descending. Ol Doinyo Lengai, which means "Mountain of God" in the Maa language of the native Maasai people, is a volcano that is part of the greater volcanic system of the Great Rift Valley. It is unique among active volcanoes in that it produces natrocarbonatite lava, which causes it to erupt at significantly lower temperatures than normal lava. The trekking now over, you will be transferred by 4x4 to Kamakia camp for breakfast and a rest before continuing on for your international departure, or onwards safari.
