Untouched Indian Ocean

About Mafia Island

A perfect escape from busy life — pure reefs, whale sharks, and relaxed island living without tarmac roads or crowds.

Mafia Island remains largely untouched with few tourists. The atmosphere is relaxed and locals are very welcoming. Some of the richest coral reefs in the world surround the island, with nearly half the coastline protected as Mafia Island Marine Park.

Marine Life & Diving

The marine park includes coral reef, mangrove forest, and lagoons — the largest protected area in the Indian Ocean. The barrier reef features 50 types of coral and more than 460 species of fish, making it a dream for divers and snorkelers.

Mafia’s dive spots have remained a well-kept secret. Spot humpback whales, sea turtles, and the biggest fish on earth — the whale shark. A unique unwind after your Tanzania safari or Kilimanjaro climb.

Where Is Mafia Island?

Mafia Island (“Chole Shamba”) sits in Tanzania as one of the six districts of the Pwani Region. It is governed from the mainland, not from the semi-autonomous region of Zanzibar.

The Mafia archipelago consists of one large island (394 sq. km) and several smaller inhabited islands such as Chole Island (~2 sq. km). Chole Bay, the protected deep-water port, is surrounded by islands, sandbanks, and some of the finest beaches in East Africa.

Beaches & Excursions

  • Mangrove-fringed coasts mean beaches are narrower than Zanzibar — but still beautiful.
  • Sandbank trips are a highlight — we want you to enjoy the water, not just bake in the sun.
  • Ideal for honeymooners and travellers seeking silence after the mainland bush.
