Mt. Kilimanjaro Weather

Best Time to Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro

Choose the right season for clear skies, safer trails, and the best chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.

Scaling Mount Kilimanjaro is an incredible feat β€” but weather can make or break your climb. Near the equator, Kilimanjaro has two main seasons: dry and wet. We help you plan with confidence.

Mt. Kilimanjaro Weather

Bad weather can mean deep mud, ice, fog, and soaked gear. The dry season offers clearer skies and more stable conditions β€” the preferred window for most climbers. Wet-season climbs bring drizzle, cloud cover, and moisture in clothing and equipment, making the trek harder.

With expert guidance from Real Life Adventure Travel, you can match your dates to the route and season that fit your goals. Book during the dry season and give yourself the best shot at the summit.

Best Time to Go

January to Mid-March

Ideal time to climb β€” mild conditions and fewer crowds. Mostly dry days with clear skies and brief showers. Rain chances increase toward the long rains in March. For fewer crowds and drier northern slopes, consider Rongai, Shira, or Lemosho instead of busy Machame and Marangu.

April – June

Main rainy season (late March through mid-June). Warm in Tanzania but very wet on the mountain; many operators do not run climbs in April/May. Dates are unpredictable.

June – August

Rain decreases; trails dry out but nights are bitter cold. June is quiet; climber numbers build through July and August.

August – October

Peak season β€” excellent weather, many clear days, warmer than June/July. Some cloud in forest zones; conditions stay good above the rainforest into mid-October.

October / November

Weather becomes less stable; fewer climbers. Afternoon clouds and occasional storms β€” fine if you are equipped for brief rain.

November / December

Short rainy season through mid-December β€” colder, wetter, and more hazardous. Not the best time for most trekkers.

December / January

Second peak around Christmas/New Year β€” very busy despite possible rain and thick clouds lower on the mountain. We generally suggest other windows if you can choose.
